Author Spotlight – Olivia Starke

1) How long have you been writing for the purpose of publication?
I worked on my high school newspaper, does that count as publication? As far as romance, I got started in 2009 and got published that year.

2) What's the shortest and/or longest amount of time it's ever taken you to complete a book?
FOREVER. That's what it feels like with all of them. I've had some in my Works In Progress file for several years, including my Beachwalk Press story Project Terminal: Legacy. I'm in the process of cleaning it out and finding homes for my babies.

3) What is your writing schedule like?
I try to get writing in throughout the day, usually starting at 2 PM when my chores and errands are finished.

4) Is there a certain time of the day that you tend to be more creative?
Afternoon into evening. Mornings. Ugh.

5) Where is your favorite place to write?
My bedroom at the moment.

6) What type of environment do you prefer when you write? (ie complete silence, background music, etc)
I need a little bit of noise or I start drifting off into LaLa Land.

7) Are you plotter or a pantser?
I used to be a huge proponent of pantsing it, but now I'm a plotter. I've seen the error of my ways. I plot the entire story in my head, and if I get stuck I write it down on paper.

8) Is there a genre you've never written, but you would like to try writing?
I *heart* historicals, but I'm bad with history. I have a fun idea for a F/F paranormal set in western times so I may make the leap.

9) What advice would you give to a new writer?
Don't. Ever. Quit. I actually had a random person message me on Facebook last week asking for advice. This is something I told her, just don't give up! Stick to it and you're miles ahead of those who throw in the towel early on.

10) What do you think makes a good story?
A feisty heroine who honestly doesn't need to be saved by the hero, but it happens anyway. I also like a good anti-hero hero. The bad boys you really shouldn't like, but do because at heart you're a bad girl too ;)

11) Have you ever had writer's block? If so, what do you do about it?
Scream and rage at the Muse and Writing Drones. Okay, not really. I take a break and find other creative outlets like drawing or I read to get the juices flowing. I learned quickly the more I stress the worse it gets.

12) Who are some of your favorite authors?
How do I pick? I'm friends with so many fabulous authors whose writing I love, it'd be hard to list them here :) Outside of them I love the classics. My favorite book of all time is The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. I also like Leo Tolstoy. I'm a book nerd.

13) What are you reading at the moment?
Let's check my Kindle…I'm in the middle of a book by Ashlynn Monroe and I'm also reading Pride and Prejudice.

14) What do you do to relax?
Walk the dogs.

15) What's your favorite way to procrastinate?
Stare off into space. I'm a pro.

16) Chocolate or vanilla, coffee or tea, Coke or Pepsi, dogs or cats, sunrises or sunsets?
Chocolate, coffee AND tea, yuck—neither Coke nor Pepsi, both dogs or cats! (but I'm a cat person tbh) sunsets because being up that early means I'm going to be grumpy later.

17) Are you a collector of anything?
Cats. I'd have to say cats. Not figurines, nor plush toys. I mean actual cats.

18) If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

19) If you could be any animal, what would you be?
Horse, it'd be fun to see the world from my horses' perspective.

20) What's your biggest pet peeve?
There, their, they're confusion.

21) If you could time travel where would you go and why/what would you do?
If I were time travelling I really really really hope it's with the Doctor. And I'd go see dinosaurs, because I'm a science nerd too. What 30-something woman WOULDN'T want to see a real live dinosaur? Okay, don't answer that…
