Author Spotlight – Emily Wood

1) How long have you been writing for the purpose of publication?
Well, I've been writing for years but I only had the guts to start sending things out about a year ago.

2) What's the shortest and/or longest amount of time it's ever taken you to complete a book?
Since the stories in my series 'Rags and Riches' are short, they haven't taken me that long to write so far, about a few months each. However, I started writing another, longer book about a month ago and so far all I've got is about half a chapter and a whole heap of research, so I'm guessing it is going to take me quite a while to write.

3) Is there a certain time of the day that you tend to be more creative?
It's definitely mornings, but as a mother of two very young children I have to cram my writing into times when they're both asleep.

4) Are you plotter or a panser?
I am the most indecisive person in the world, so even though a lot of time goes into plotting, I tend to change my mind and rewrite things a lot before I'm happy with the final copy.

5) Is there a genre you enjoy reading, but would not write?
Comedy. I like reading Danny Wallace, Dave Gorman, and books by stand-up comedians, but I could never pull it off myself.

6) Is there a genre you've never written, but you would like to try writing?
I absolutely love historical romances, and I'm giving this a go now.

7) What do you think makes a good story?
Believable characters that the reader cares about.

8) Have you ever had writer's block? If so, what do you do about it?
Yes. I just carry on writing something, even if it's a letter, or just about my day, anything really so I don't get out of the habit of writing. If you write something every day, eventually you get through it.

9) What do you do to relax?
I don't remember! No, I'm joking, I love taking walks, taking bubble baths, and baking (with varying degrees of success).

10) Chocolate or vanilla, coffee or tea, Coke or Pepsi, dogs or cats, sunrises or sunsets?
I love the taste of chocolate but the scent of vanilla. I drink tea for comfort, coffee when I need to stay awake, and green tea when I'm trying to fool myself into believing I have a healthy diet. I'm not a massive fan of fizzy drinks. Cats, I admire their free spirits. Definitely sunrises, I love the feeling of a new day with all its possibilities.

11) Are you a collector of anything?
My fiancé would probably tell you I'm a collector of everything, and most of it useless; I'm very sentimental. I have a huge collection of hats, most of which I have never worn, because I get a new hat from every country I've been to, and because my friends know this and contribute, I have the most outrageous hats from around the world.

12) If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
The power to control time would be great because I never have enough time to do half the things I want to.

13) What's your biggest pet peeve?
People who always complain that they're bored. There is always something great you could be doing!

14) If you could time travel where would you go and why/what would you do?
I have a passion for Roman history so I would love to just be a fly on the wall in Rome pretty much throughout the history of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.
