Spotlight on BDSM by Ella Jade

Why do ropes, blindfolds, and hot wax excite us?

There's no denying the recent surge in the popularity of the BSDM genre in romance books. I currently have two Dominant/submissive titles out with Beachwalk Press, and I'm working on my third. Be My Everything is my highest selling book, having made the Amazon and All Romance Best Sellers lists. The interest got me thinking about why I like to read and write about this subject.

I've always been drawn to a strong, domineering, alpha male in my romance novels. I like a man who can take control and get what he wants. When I write a dominant hero, I want him to take charge in the bedroom, but I also want him to take care of his woman. By blending BDSM elements into my stories, I get to create some pretty intriguing characters. I love a flawed man. There is always so much growth potential for a hero with issues. I can't resist a conflicted Dom. An alpha who thinks he's above falling in love until he finds the right girl is ultra sexy.

My submissive characters are usually subservient in the bedroom, but know how to challenge their man in all other areas of life. I try to strike a balance between the two main characters. I like showing just because the heroine is a submissive doesn't mean she's weak. Creating the dynamics and setting the boundaries between the hero and heroine is the most fun for me when developing the plot. And, of course, throwing in conflict, struggle, and explosive sex can't hurt.

During my research into the lifestyle, I found there are certain aspects of it that frighten me a bit. I think it was that fear of the unknown that drew me into the genre. Having fantasies of the BDSM world holds the allure for me. If I can flee into the pages of a well-crafted romance that focuses on bondage and relinquishing control, I'm thrilled. A good romance takes us to another realm, and allows us to imagine what it could be like to be in the heroine's place. Romance is an escape. My escape includes creating sexy, tie-me-to-the-bed-and-have-your-wicked-way-with-me men. We all got something;)

My BDSM books aren't hardcore. They focus on the romance side of the story while adding the Dominant/submissive ingredient to create a unique journey for the lead couple. I hope you'll get lost in my words…

Great interview – I am especially drawn to BDSM – which I am not subservient outside the bedroom, but I prefer it when in :) I have enjoyed your work and hope to continue to do so!

    • Ella Jade says:

Thanks, Kerry. I'm love writing those hot, dominant men but I enjoy finding their flaws too. Deep down they all just want to be loved;) Thanks for reading my work.

I have only read one of youhr books but that is all it took to hook me in. Just purchased another of your books today and anxious to start reading it! Great interview!!

I love the genre but certain aspects for me are just too "out" there. I realize and understand that everyone has different wants and needs. I respect that but I still don't understand the whole "pain" thing. :)

    Great post.

    Marika

    • Ella Jade says:

I get that Marika. I try not to explore the whole pain aspect in my books. I may mention it, but its not my main focus. I'm more of a romance girl with a strong alpha;) Thanks for stopping by;)

  • Andrea I says:

I love the genre, but usually prefer those not hard core. It's always better with romance.

    • Ella Jade says:

I agree. I love the romance aspect of it;) I like to blend the BDSM elements into the plot, but I want to explore who the couple are and what brings them together. Thanks for commenting.

I don't generally seek BDSM books out for their own sake, but I've been known to enjoy it when it comes up. Though I don't see it enough for my taste, I love it when a man is courageous enough to explore his submissive side (either in an m/m relationship or at the hands of a Domme).

Congrats on the book Ella. Be My Everything sounds great. I like that there is a story and not just sex/spanking et cetera.
