Author Spotlight – Kaylie Newell

1) Where is your favorite place to write?
I love writing at Barnes and Noble! Lots of good mojo there with all the books and browsing customers :)

2) What type of environment do you prefer when you write? (ie complete silence, background music, etc)
I like soft background music or white noise. Sometimes if I’m feeling a little blocked, I’ll pop in my earphones and listen to my iPod. That charges my batteries, but I can’t do it for too long or I’ll start to get distracted.

3) Are you a plotter or a panser?
Both! I like to have a general idea of where the story is going, but I also like it when my characters surprise me. That keeps it fun.

4) What is the most difficult or challenging thing for you as a writer?
The hardest thing about writing for me is finding a set time to do it. I have two little ones who are a huge blessing, but they’re also little time suckers. If I’m not disciplined every day, I’ll find evening sneaking up on me without even a sentence to show for it.

5) Is there a genre you’ve never written, but you would like to try writing?
I’d like to try and write a historical romance one day. I love the idea of picking up a book and being able to step back in time. But boy, the idea of it scares me. All that research. Whew!

6) What advice would you give a new writer?
Never give up! Seriously. It’s so hard when you’re just starting out and it seems like the only correspondence you get via e-mail are weekend coupons for The Gap and rejections notices. But keep at it! You will get there. And remember that the journey can be very rewarding if you let it be.

7) Who are some of your favorite authors?
Stephen King is my hero. I think I’ve read nearly everything he’s ever written. Some of it twice :) Karen Robards is my favorite romance author. I love Alice Hoffman, Kathryn Stockett, Suzanne Collins and Betty Smith. Oh, I also love Ken Follett. I might need a few days to list them all!

8 ) What are you reading at the moment?
The Stand and Simply Irresistible. And Dr. Seuss. Lots of Dr. Seuss at bedtime.

9) What’s your favorite way to procrastinate?
Ahh, that one’s easy. I’m an iPhone owner. One can never get enough US Weekly in tiny iPhone app increments.

10) Are you a collector of anything?
I collect I Love Lucy memorabilia. Lucille Ball makes me laugh even when I don’t want to. I love seeing her and Ethel when I walk around my house. They make me smile unexpectedly.

11) If you could be any animal, what would you be?
I think I’d have to be a sloth. They don’t have to have an excuse to be lazy.

Great interview. A sloth? I think I would want to be a cat, to sleep and lounge all day. Congrats on your book Kaylie, I look forward to reading it.

  • Congratulations on your new book, Kaylie. I had no idea you were so in to I Love Lucy. Do your characters have similar collections?

  • Kaylie says:

Hi Christine! Thanks for stopping by. It was a close one between the sloth and a cat :) Our cats definitely have it pretty good-

This is a great interview! I too wish I could be lazy without having to feel bad, sloth or cat sounds good. :) And I didn't know you liked I love Lucy Kaylie, I grew up on that show! I have seen every episode like 10 times! :) Congratulations Kaylie, can't wait to buy my copy of your book!
